HISTORY ASPECTS: The Japanese battleship Yamato was the lead ship of the Yamato-class, the largest and most heavily armed battleships ever built. Armed with nine 18.1-inch guns-the largest caliber ever mounted on a warship-it was a floating fortress capable of devastating enemy vessels at extreme range. By mid-1944, Japan's naval situation had deteriorated, and Yamato was finally called into action. On April 7, Yamato was overwhelmed by waves of U.S. carrier aircraft, suffering multiple bomb and torpedo hits before capsizing and exploding, taking most of its crew with it.
